Sunday (Supper)

Departing from Murray Bridge which is just 1 hour North of Adelaide in the heart of the Murraylands, the Captain and crew of the luxurious P.S. Proud Mary look forward to welcoming you aboard. Upon boarding at 7.15pm you will be shown to your superb river view accommodation with time to settle in and enjoy a drink at the bar before a delicious supper is served at 8.30pm.

As you cruise, Expedition’s powerful floodlights illuminate the shore. This is an excellent opportunity to see the River environment in a different perspective and may allow you to view of some of the nocturnal wildlife, especially birds such as night herons, owls and coots. Later, P.S. Proud Mary ties up for a night of peace and tranquility in the Australian bush at Woodlane.

Monday (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Your cruise continues upstream as you enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast. You will pass huge lagoons teeming with bird life. During floods these inland lagoons were so immense that in the early riverboat days, Captains could not find the true channels. In many cases the water expanded for miles. In the early 1900’s riverboat Captains planted willow trees along the banks to clearly mark the main river channel. Today the willows provide the perfect haven for the prolific and colourful bird life. Mid morning P.S. Proud Mary arrives in picturesque Mannum. Here you will board the waiting coach for a history tour of this small township which played a significant role in the development of South Australia. Captain William Randell launched the 1st Paddle Steamer on The Murray River the “Mary Ann” in 1853. By the late 1880’s there were over 250 Paddle Steamers and barges trading on the River Murray, and Mannum became an industrious inland port. On tour you will re-trace the colourful history of several pioneering families whose efforts shaped the successful development of this region. Your tour includes a visit to the ‘Olden Days, Olden Ways’ Museum in Mannum, here you will find a large collection of historic memorabilia. Lunch will be served aboard your boat as you cruise upstream past lovely Lake Carlet, peaceful Bow Hill and Purnong. Early in the evening, The Proud Mary moors at Walker Flat. The Bird and wildlife here is prolific, including wallabies, wild ducks and bush turkeys. This evening is “Australiana Night” and we will be featuring the use of some traditional “Bush foods” such as emu, kangaroo, damper bread, fresh water crustaceans (yabbies), lemon myrtle, wild bush tomatoes and quandongs (wild peaches), combined into exciting creations by our chefs to showcase a new evolving Australian cuisine. Following dinner a guided Nocturnal Discovery Tour, an insight into abundant wildlife including the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat. It is a perfect opportunity to view the nocturnal animals of Australia in their natural habitat.

Tuesday (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Depart early this morning and cruise upstream while enjoying a hearty breakfast. Mid-morning pull into Ngaut Ngaut Conservation Park the site of an Archaeological Dig dating back over 8000 years. Meet the waiting coach for a journey to Swan reach and Murray Aquaculture Yabby farm before heading down to Blanchetown Winery for lunch. Reboard your Murray River cruise boat as it passes through Lock 1 mid-afternoon - the River Murray is dammed by 13 locks built for the early riverboat trade. Water cascades over the lock creating an excellent feeding place for bird life including Pelicans and dozens of species of water birds. This evening your Murray River cruise will moor upriver from Blanchetown for a wonderful evening filled with entertainment.

Wednesday (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Departing your tranquil overnight mooring your cruise boat arrives at the historic town of Morgan. In its heyday, Morgan was one of the busiest South Australian Murray River ports. Morgan is located on the "Great Elbow" of the North-West Bend on the Murray River. Take a wonder though the many heritage sights of this once booming riverside town. Most of the historic buildings including the customs house & courthouse are located on Railway Terrace. Reboard the Proud Mary and cruise through Lock 2 to the overnight mooring place for your on shore BBQ.

Thursday (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Cruise while enjoying more wonderful food before a mid-morning arrival in Waikerie, where they boast more sunshine hours yearly than the famed Queensland Gold Coast! The name Waikerie is said to mean “many wings” after giant swift moth “wei kari”, the name given by the original indigenous community. It’s an appropriate name, considering the teeming birds of the lagoons and wetlands that edge the river. Waikerie was established in 1894 when its first settlers arrived by the paddle steamers. After lunch take a tour at Havenhand Chocolate Makers, re-join your Murray River cruise boat and cruise through Lock 3 before arriving for cocktails, hors d’oevres and a formal Captain’s Dinner.

Friday (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

After breakfast this morning take a tour to the Banrock Station Winery & Wetlands via a coach. Banrock Station has committed itself to working towards improving the surrounding area. By recreating the natural drying & flooding cycle of the wetland, it is once more full of life. After a beautiful relaxing walk around this wonderful area, reboard the waiting coach for your return journey to Cobdogla to reboard the boat for lunch. Cruise this afternoon for a mid-afternoon arrival into Loxton. Loxton is a charming, vibrant town 255 kilometres northeast of Adelaide on the banks of the River Murray. The town is a thriving centre of one of the most productive agricultural and horticultural regions of the state. One of Loxton’s wineries alone crushes about 85,000 tonnes of grapes a year.

Saturday (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Before your Murray River cruise boat departs for the day, take a wander around Loxton which is also known as the “Garden town of the Riverland” because of its beautifully maintained gardens that explode in a riot of colour all year road. After your stroll the boat will head towards Moorook, which is one of the series of villages, and towns that encircle a group of lakes and lagoons that make up the Riverland region. This afternoon your cruise boat will moor to allow you the opportunity to join our small tender boat for a cruise through the area where Tall River Gums and river box rise from a tangle of Lignum fringing the lagoon. Reed beds protect the nursery areas for many water birds and provide homes for insects, frogs and small fish upon which Egrets and Herons prey. A nature trail wonders around the edge of the waterways. This evening you will enjoy a wonderful BBQ Dinner.

Sunday (breakfast, lunch)

Cruise this morning while enjoying breakfast. Today you will be taking in the wonder that is the higher reaches of South Australia’s Murray River. Cruising back through Loxton and the Murray River National Park before a superb buffet lunch prepared with fresh local produce. This afternoon there will be more spectacular scenery before the vessel ties up in Berri. Berri features a gorgeous riverfront with plenty of areas for picnics or playing sport and also includes floating Wharf platforms, lookouts, historic monuments and indigenous bridge mural. Berri was originally park of Cobdogla Station and a mooring place for paddle steamers. The town of Berri takes its name from the Aboriginal word “bery bery” meaning “bend in the river” and was proclaimed in 1911. The Captain and Crew will bid farewell to guests and our new found friends before disembarkation early afternoon. On arrival in Berri, join the awaiting coach for your transfer to Murray Bridge and Adelaide.
